POSING TIPS

  • Imagine there is a small string or hook in the top of your head pulling you toward the ceiling. This will help stretch and straighten your spine.

  • While keeping your shoulders in place imagine that another string is pulling you forward by the nose or the chin. You can also imagine placing your chin over an apple. This will help accentuate your jawline.

  • Smiles are almost always more approachable than a non smile. A good smile makes you look more confident and approachable. Depending on our position, industry, and use-case you’ll have to make this decision for yourself.

  • Our eyes communicate a great deal to a viewer of our photo. Small adjustments here can have a big impact. A squinch or smolder by tightening the corner of the eye is a simple but powerful adjustment.

  • By correctly positioning our shoulders we can add both depth and confidence to our photo with ease. A quick tip is to pinch your elbows into your sides and rotate your hands outward away from the body.

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Texturing and layering can help add depth and dimension to your image. Instead of a solo button-up shirt, consider adding a blazer as well. Texture can also be amplified by using thoughtful jewelry or accessories.

  • Avoid a completely white top. In addition to creating exposure issue that will fight with your skin tone it can also cause you to appear as a floating head when photographed again a white backdrop.

  • If you typically wear glasses in your professional interactions then it is also a good idea to wear them for your photo. Small adjustments can be made to avoid reflections, but lensless frames can also save the day.

  • Try to keep your jewelry and accessories minimal. As a headshot is not necessarily a fashion statement or advertisement, larger or overly reflective jewelry and accessories can detract from your photo.

  • Casual is the new formal! Modern work environments are largely more accepting of more casual workwear, which may also make you look more approachable in your photo. This, of course, will need to be an industry-specific decision.
